Minimalist Art in the Monks’ Ancient Cells in La Morra
Slow down, observe, subtract. This is the invitation of “Silenzi” (“Silences”), the contemporary art exhibition curated by Alessandro Allocco, which from October 3 to 25 transforms the ancient monks’ cells of the Annunziata in La Morra into a space for listening and contemplation. The exhibition brings together works by eleven Italian artists united by a contemporary abstract minimalist approach: Morago, Sara Melis, Marco Galli, Andrés Avré, Ivan Sghirinzetti, Alberto Venegoni, Stefano Canavè, Carlo Olper, Augusto Melotti, Stefano Migliorini and Fiorella Manzini. The opening is scheduled for Saturday, October 3 at 5:30 p.m.
The choice of venue is an integral part of the project. Three kilometres from La Morra, along the provincial road to Alba, the hamlet of Annunziata is home to the Romanesque-Baroque complex of the former Benedictine Abbey of San Martino di Marcenasco. It is one of the Langhe’s most significant monuments and represents the oldest part of the town. The abbey’s cellars, with an entrance next to the church, house the Ratti Museum of Alba Wines. Above the museum, beneath the portico, a monumental staircase leads to the upper floor, where the monks’ cells were once located and where the exhibition is now on display.
